English

In English, we are exploring a Victorian artist’s work. L.S Lowry painted scenes which allow viewers to reflect on life during the Victorian era. We will be focusing on character and setting descriptions during this half term. Additionally, some of our lessons will be centered around the poem The Jabberwocky- this will give us an opportunity to compose, rehearse and perform in class.

Spelling rules for next half term see separate sheet.

Letters have been sent out regarding our Armley Mill trip on Friday 16thNovember. We are encouraging children to dress as a Victorian school child on the day if they wish.

Maths

We use the Maths No Problem Primary Maths Series from Year1 to Year 6

It is a child-centered approach, which is fun to teach, using physical resources, problem solving and group work. The series is fully aligned with the national curriculum.

This half term, we are moving on to look at whole number word problems, graphs and fractions. A good recall of number facts, including times tables, is vital so they need to be practised regularly.

Design and Technology

We have planned a DT project which links to our topic The Victorians. Children will be planning, designing and making a Victorian toy using mechanisms. They will use their knowledge from our recent Science week (Forces) to effectively design a toy which is fit for purpose. After creating, the children will be evaluating and reflecting on their design and end product.

Living and Growing

As outlined on the recent letter, we will be holding a meeting on Tuesday 6thNovember to present the videos and materials which will be used during our upcoming Living and Growing lessons. This will give you a chance to ask any questions you may have and to see what the children in Year 5 will be learning about during the week.

Our Living and Growing week will commence from Monday 26thNovember.

Topic

Our topic of The Victorians will continue until Christmas.
